چکیده

Few experiments in the coastal plain region of the southeastern United States have reported the effect of long-term tillage and tillage intensity on chemical soil quality indicators. The purpose of this study was to determine the 17-year influence of four tillage systems on chemical soil quality indicators in a Benndale fine sandy loam (coarse-loamy, siliceous, semiactive, thermic, Typic Paleudults) and a Lucedale very fine sandy loam (fine-loamy, siliceous, subactive, thermic, Rhodic Paleudults) in the coastal plain region of Alabama. Tillage systems were no-tillage, disk, moldboard plow, and chisel plow under varied double-cropping in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Soil pH, sum of extractable bases, soil organic carbon (SOC), and soil nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) were determined on soil samples collected at depths of 0–2.5, 2.5–7.5, 7.5–15.0, 15.0–22.5, and 22.5–30 cm. Aggregation, carbohydrate, total and particulate organic carbon changes by cultivation of an arid soil in Central Iran

The objectives of this paper were to determine the response of soil quality indicators and organic carbon (OC) distributions within different aggregate classes to changes in land use from desert soils to cropland occurring in the Abarkooh plain, Central Iran. Composite soil samples of the desert soil, wheat and alfalfa fields were taken from three different depths and soil quality indicators, i...

Soil strength, cotton root growth and lint yield in a southeastern USA coastal loamy sand

Inverse linear relationships between soil strength and yield in Coastal Plain soils that have subsurface genetic hard layers have previously been developed for corn (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown under management systems that include annual or biannual non-inversion deep tillage. In a field study in the southeastern Coastal Plains of the US...

Mineralogy of eroded sediments derived from highly weathered Ultisols of central Alabama

Coarse-textured surface horizons are common in highly weathered southeastern US coastal plain soils. These soils have historically been managed under conventional tillage practices, but conservation tillage management practices are increasing. Although clay (<2 m) contents are low in these surface horizons (typically <100 g kg−1), the reactive nature of this fraction tends to play a dominant r...

Conservation Tillage and Cover Crop Influences on Cotton Production on a Southeastern U.S. Coastal Plain Soil

Understanding cover crop and tillage system interactions within specific environments can help maximize productivity and economic returns of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) produced on sandy coastal plain soils of the southeastern USA. A strip-plot design with three replications was used to evaluate the cover crops Austrian winter pea [Pisum sativum L. ssp. arvense (L.)], balansa clover (Trifoli...

Soil Quality Evaluation Using the Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) in Brazilian Oxisols with Contrasting Texture

The Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) was developed in the U.S.A. and has been used as a tool for assessing and quantifying changes in soil quality/health (SQ) induced by land uses and agricultural practices in that region and elsewhere throughout the world. An initial study using SMAF in Brazil was recently published, but additional research for a variety of soils and management syst...
